Three quirky UK laws that are still in effect today

  1. Carrying Planks of Wood on Pavements: According to the Metropolitan Police Act, it’s illegal to carry planks of wood along a pavement unless there’s an intention to unload them from a vehicle. This law dates back to medieval times when overloaded carts would drop wood, posing a danger to pedestrians.
  2. Flying Kites in Public Places: Surprisingly, flying a kite in a public place is technically illegal. The Metropolitan Police Act of 1839 prohibits this activity to prevent common nuisances and danger to local passengers.
  3. Gambling in Libraries: Gambling is forbidden in any library in the United Kingdom. The Library Offences Act was put in place to maintain a quiet and focused environment for studying and reading.
